Getting a Neck Lift

Getting a Neck Lift

Getting older may be inevitable but looking older doesn’t have to be thanks to cosmetic surgery. One type of cosmetic surgery that is becoming increasingly popular is a procedure known as a neck lift. As its name suggests, this procedure involves lifting and repositioning the skin on the neck that has been adversely affected by aging, altering it so that it is smoother, tighter, and more youthful in appearance.

How Does Aging Affect the Neck?

The aging process can affect any part of our body including our neck. The skin that covers our body undergoes a number of changes as we get older. The natural decrease in the amount of collagen and elastin produce by our body causes the skin to become thinner, drier, and less elastic than it was before. These changes, in combination with gravity and loss of volume in the face that also typically occurs, can cause the skin to become saggy and loose, giving it the ability to gather in folds that are often referred to as a ‘turkey neck’.

Although a turkey neck can be covered by wearing specific styles of sweater, or hidden beneath a scarf, choosing a neck lift means that you won’t ever have to worry about its appearance. Here’s what you need to know about getting a neck lift.

What to Expect From Neck Lift Surgery?

Like many other cosmetic surgery procedures, a neck lift is a simple, straightforward process. It can be carried out using just local anesthetic, and some patients ask for sedation. Alternatively, it may be possible for you to have the procedure under a general anesthetic. You can expect the surgery to last between one and three hours depending on the extent of your surgery.

Liposuction is one of the most common techniques used in a neck lift. Tiny incisions are made behind each ear and under the chin, and the liposuction tools are used to vacuum fat from the jawline and beneath the chin. In addition to liposuction, or sometimes instead, bands and folds of skin can be eliminated by accessing and tightening the neck muscles through small incisions. In some rare instances, it may be necessary to cut away excess skin, but this is avoided wherever possible in order to prevent scarring. Any incisions will be closed using sutures.

Neck Lift Recovery

As with any cosmetic surgery, if you undergo a neck lift you will need to give yourself time to heal and recover. In most instances, recovery from a neck lift procedure is fairly quick. Some swelling and bruising are to be expected, and you may need to take pain medication to keep you comfortable for the first few days following your procedure.

You will need to take at least a few days off of work, with most patients taking an average of a week away from their job. Your surgeon will be able to give you more specific information about how long you should schedule away from work. During your recovery, you will be given specific guidance on how to look after your neck while you heal.

Are you interested in undergoing a neck lift? Before you can be given the go-ahead for any cosmetic surgery procedure you will first need to attend a consultation with your chosen surgeon. They will assess your health, your neck, and your reasons for surgery to determine if you are suitable for a neck lift.
